Jamaica’s Carnival April 2017

Tales from the Tribe Kwabena:

“I have known Shermica for well over two decades so I am familiar with her deep connection to Carnival. I can vividly recall the feathers, masks and costume that decorated her home in preparation for the road. I thought I knew what Carnival was all about; however, it it was not until my first experience this past April in Jamaica that it all became clear to me.

I had been to Jamaica before for vacation but this was something completely different. From the moment I boarded the plane, I could feel the energy of Carnival coming from my fellow passengers. That sensation only heightened the closer we got to Jamaica and once we arrived, I got it. We had all come together to celebrate our culture, our music, our food and each other.

My first carnival experience was so much more than I had ever imagined it would be. Stepping on to the road in full costume was both moving and transformative. I ran into a few old friends and made some new ones. Overwhelmed with love and happiness, I felt very much at home, with my people. Organized chaos is what I call it, and I cannot wait to do it again.”
